MP Julie Dzerowicz and MP Alexandra Mendès Named Co-Chairs of
Canada-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group
(OTTAWA) – Today, MP Julie Dzerowicz (Davenport) and MP Alexandra Mendès (Brossard — Saint-Lambert) were named Co-Chairs of the Canada-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Senator Mobina Jaffer and MP Bev Shipley will be serving as Vice-Chairs, and MP Ramesh Sangha will be serving as Treasurer. “I was pleasantly surprised to see so many colleagues show their appreciation and support for the Canada-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group today,” said Alexandra Mendès.
“I am proud to represent the largest Portuguese community in Canada,” added Dzerowicz, whose Private Member’s Bill passed unanimously in November 2017 to declare the month of June as Portuguese Heritage Month and June 10 as Portugal Day. “I’m looking forward to serving as Co-Chair of the Canada-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group alongside MP Alexandra Mendès and continuing to champion issues that are important to the Portuguese community in Canada.”
Last week, a Canada-Portugal Youth Mobility Arrangement was signed by the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Mr. José Luís Carneiro, Secretary of State of Portuguese Communities Abroad. With this arrangement, 2,000 Portuguese youth will have the opportunity to travel and work in Canada, while 2,000 young Canadians may travel and work in Portugal each year.
“I have been a strong advocate for a youth mobility agreement between Canada and Portugal for years and I am absolutely delighted that one was finally signed last week,” said Julie Dzerowicz.
“As the new Co-Chairs for the coming year, MP Julie Dzerowicz and I will devote our energy to ensuring the continued growth of parliamentary exchanges between Portugal and Canada,” added Alexandra Mendès. “Congratulations to all of our colleagues who are part of the new Executive.”
